Southern Indiana’s Comeback:

By Conservijohn | May 11, 2025*

Southern Indiana is on the move, and I see a region seizing its moment. New highways, urban redevelopment, and expansive wildlife areas are reshaping our communities, driven by the conservative policies of the Trump administration. From 2017 to 2021, its focus on infrastructure, deregulation, and economic growth cleared the way for projects like the Mid-States Corridor, I-65 upgrades, and Bloomington’s Hopewell East. These aren’t just plans—they’re proof that a bold, conservative approach delivers results. Here’s why.

### Southern Indiana’s Big Projects

The region is buzzing with transformative developments. Here’s what’s happening:

- **Hopewell East, Bloomington Hospital Re-Use Project**: Bloomington is turning an outdated hospital site into a dynamic hub with new roads, a shared-use street for pedestrians and cyclists, and Hopewell Commons Park. It’s urban renewal that boosts local business and community pride.
- **4,000-Acre Fish & Wildlife Area**: A newly opened recreational area spans 4,000 acres, offering hunting, fishing, and outdoor exploration. It’s a nod to Indiana’s commitment to conserving its natural heritage.
- **I-65 Safety and Efficiency Project**: Interstate 65 is getting a major overhaul—new bridges, fresh pavement, and an extra lane to improve safety and ease traffic. It’s about making commutes reliable and commerce efficient.
- **Improve Interstate 64**: I-64’s upgrades aim to reduce congestion and enhance safety, strengthening Southern Indiana’s connection to economic hubs like Louisville. It’s practical infrastructure that works.
- **Mid-States Corridor Project**: This proposed highway from Rockport to I-69 will drive economic growth in rural towns like Jasper and Huntingburg. Environmental concerns exist, but planners are addressing them with careful route choices.

### How Trump’s Policies Fueled the Momentum

The Trump administration’s conservative playbook—big infrastructure investments, streamlined regulations, and a rural-first mindset—set these projects in motion. Here’s how it worked:

- **Real Money for Real Results**: The administration prioritized infrastructure through programs like BUILD and INFRA grants, channeling billions into roads and community projects. Indiana’s federal highway funds, exceeding $1 billion annually, likely supported I-65 and I-64 upgrades. The Mid-States Corridor, with its economic potential, aligns with federal priorities for rural connectivity, making it a strong candidate for grants. Hopewell East likely benefited from Opportunity Zones, a Trump-era tax incentive that spurred private investment in places like Bloomington. These policies turned vision into action.
- **Cutting Bureaucratic Delays**: Environmental reviews often stall progress, but the administration’s Executive Order 13807 (2017) streamlined NEPA, speeding up approvals. The Mid-States Corridor’s 2022 environmental study moved quickly, selecting a route to minimize impacts. I-65 and I-64 upgrades faced fewer permitting hurdles, saving time and money. This efficiency respects the need for progress without ignoring oversight.
- **Championing Rural America**: The administration’s “American Infrastructure Initiative” put rural communities first, and Southern Indiana reaped the benefits. The Fish & Wildlife Area, likely supported by the Great American Outdoors Act (signed by Trump in 2019), balances conservation with recreation. The Mid-States Corridor connects rural towns to I-69, fostering jobs and growth in areas that need it most.
- **Addressing Environmental Pushback**: The Mid-States Corridor has critics, particularly over potential impacts on the Hoosier National Forest and karst ecosystems. The administration’s NEPA reforms ensured planners listened, choosing a less invasive route to avoid sensitive areas. The Fish & Wildlife Area further shows a commitment to conservation alongside development, proving both can coexist.

### Why It Matters

These projects are reshaping Southern Indiana’s future. Hopewell East is making Bloomington a destination for businesses and families, with vibrant parks and connected streets. The Fish & Wildlife Area preserves our natural legacy while welcoming outdoor enthusiasts. I-65 and I-64 upgrades mean safer, faster travel, keeping our economy humming. The Mid-States Corridor, despite debate, promises to lift rural communities by linking them to broader markets.

Conservative leadership, exemplified by the Trump administration, made this possible. Its policies cut through bureaucracy, prioritized funding, and empowered regions like ours to build boldly. The results speak for themselves—Southern Indiana is thriving, and the path ahead looks brighter than ever.
